Leah McSweeney, former star of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New York City,” has filed a lawsuit against Bravo, NBCUniversal, and executive producer Andy Cohen, alleging a toxic workplace culture that discriminated against her as a woman with disabilities, including alcohol use disorder and mental health issues. McSweeney claims that the producers cultivated her dark secrets intentionally to exacerbate her conditions for dramatic effect.
The lawsuit accuses producers of undermining McSweeney’s sobriety by encouraging her to drink and engaging in psychological tactics to cause a relapse. It also alleges that Andy Cohen frequently uses cocaine with other “Housewives” stars, offering favorable treatment to those who participate.
Andy Cohen has denied the allegations, and NBCUniversal is conducting an investigation. Bravo released a statement emphasizing its commitment to maintaining safe work environments, noting that some of McSweeney’s claims were previously investigated and unsubstantiated.
McSweeney joined the “Housewives of New York City” cast during a relapse after nine years of sobriety, becoming sober again just before filming. Despite her decision to participate, she claims every interaction was coded encouragement to drink.
The lawsuit follows similar accusations in the reality TV world, including Caroline Manzo’s lawsuit against Bravo for sexual harassment during the filming of “Ultimate Girls Trip.” Bethenny Frankel and two entertainment lawyers have also raised concerns about mistreatment on reality shows.
McSweeney believes the working conditions for “Real Housewives” need drastic change, emphasizing the need to take alcoholism, drug addiction, and mental health issues more seriously. While acknowledging the franchise’s salvageable nature, she advocates for better treatment and respect for the stars who open up their lives for public scrutiny.
